Powerboat Level 1
This one-day course is the introductory level to Powerboating, which aims to provide a practical solution to boat handling and safety in powerboats.
The perfect solution for anyone not too confident in their own abilities.
Maximum of 3 students per course.
The RYA Level 1 syllabus is split between classroom theory and water-based practical tuition, providing an overview of the following topics:
- Personal and boat preparation
- Launching and returning to shore
- Basic boat controls
- Theory of towing
- Local bye laws and insurance
- Crewing and routines
- Awareness of other water users
- Rule of the Road
- Basic close down procedures
You will also get plenty of hands-on driving as we tutor you through skills such as:
- Planing at speed
- Picking up a mooring
- Coming alongside
- ‘Rule of the Road’ – International Regulations for Prevention of Collisions at Sea (IRPCS)
RYA Recognised Training Centre
Tayside Powerboats is a recognised RYA Training Centre. All practical courses are held on the Tay Estuary at Broughty Ferry. Our office at Marybank Lane Dundee has full classroom facilities.

Course Syllabus:
Level 1 Powerboat – Start Powerboating
This course is an introduction to boating techniques including everyday boat handling and the use of safety equipment, general seamanship, Knots, stowing kit, and preparing the boat to go to sea. This is a one day course.

Suitable clothing and footwear with personal life jacket to be worn
